Rocamadour, suspended village
Clinging to its cliff above the Alzou, Rocamadour stacks sanctuaries, houses and castle in three spectacular tiers. Pilgrims climb the one hundred and seventy steps, but everyone can marvel at the site. For a date, come in late afternoon, once the coaches have left, and dine quietly on a terrace facing the village lit by the soft evening light.
Saint-Cirq-Lapopie
Perched on a cliff above the Lot, Saint-Cirq-Lapopie was long voted favourite village of the French. André Breton lived there, seduced by the light. Its lanes lined with stone houses, its secret gardens and plunging view over the valley make it a perfect place to walk together. Many end with a drink in the shade below, by the old towpath.
Padirac chasm and Célé valley
To the north, the Padirac chasm plunges into an underground world where a navigable river winds among limestone draperies. An underground date is a change from terraces, and leaves a lasting impression. To the east, the Célé valley unfolds meadows, cliffs and discreet villages all the way to Figeac, the medieval town of Champollion. On Lyad, locals share their routes; it is up to you to choose someone to marvel with.
